Reorg not on May ballot
Someone missed the deadline and the proposal to merge Greenwood with unincorporated White River Township will not appear on the May ballot. While both the Greenwood Common Council and the White River Township Board have expressed interest in postponing the vote, neither body has taken any official action. County clerk Jill Jackson says only the proposed $23 million expansion of the jail was submitted before the Noon Friday deadline. It is not clear when or if the proposal will ever be put before the voters. “The talk is” that it will be on the November ballot. But, who knows if anyone will follow through with that date any more than they did with the officially approved date of May. Another proposal, for additional school funding, also is being delay, apparently until sometime this summer. Why Bargersville should support the merger
For some reason the majority of the residents of Bargersville, especially those who have been recently annexed, still seem to stand firmly in opposition to the merger of the remaining unincorporated area of White River Township and Greenwood. Why would they oppose a tax cut? If the reorganization plan is approved by the voters residents of Bargersville will see their taxes go down. Not by a lot, but these days, especially after the non-farm residents got hit with a stiff tax increase from the town of Bargersville, why not take any tax cut you can get? All residents of White River Township currently pay a township tax, if the township goes away that tax goes away. The township services, including poor relief and abandoned cemetary maintenance, will be picked up by the “new” city of Greenwood with tax dollars collected only from those who live within the “new” Greenwood. Bargersville residents get the services
Politically Homeless
Tonight (Sunday, February 28) I attended my first Lincoln Day Dinner, as the guest of a candidate that I was introduced to by a neighbor and turned out to be someone I could strongly support for their office. The event was well organized, well attended, and full of a lot of qualified, and maybe a few not so qualified, candidates. You will find that in any political party. What struck me as I was driving home was that I felt out of place, not because of the people, I was welcomed with open arms, or the message, retiring Representative Steve Buyer and die-hard Republican radio host Greg Garrison told us what we all expected, and wanted, to hear. America is on the wrong course. Only by returning to “our Republican ideals” and upholding the constitution will we get America back on track. It is a message that sells well to a Republican crowd and according to a recent CNN poll, quoted by Mr. Garrison, to the 56% of Americans that now believe
Marks & Messick to face off for Trustee position
If you thought the battle between the White River Township Trustee Jay Marks and the township board was interesting the primary battle should be more so. Board member Mark Messick is not seeking re-election to the board but instead is running against Mr. Marks for the trustee position. No other candidate has filed as a Republican and no Democrat filed for the position. With the deadline to file for White River Township offices set for noon tomorrow, Friday, February 18, we decided to check with the Johnson County Clerk and find out who has filed as of 4pm Thursday. So far only Republicans have filed to be on the ballot. Libertarians, who have automatic ballot access in Indiana, have a longer time to file as candidates since they are classified as a minor party. As of late Thursday here is the list of those on running for the White River Township board; incumbents John Ebert and Joe Acker have both filed to run for re-elect. Forrest Chambers,
