Politically Homeless
Tonight (Sunday, February 28) I attended my first Lincoln Day Dinner, as the guest of a candidate that I was introduced to by a neighbor and turned out to be someone I could strongly support for their office. The event was well organized, well attended, and full of a lot of qualified, and maybe a few not so qualified, candidates. You will find that in any political party. What struck me as I was driving home was that I felt out of place, not because of the people, I was welcomed with open arms, or the message, retiring Representative Steve Buyer and die-hard Republican radio host Greg Garrison told us what we all expected, and wanted, to hear. America is on the wrong course. Only by returning to “our Republican ideals” and upholding the constitution will we get America back on track. It is a message that sells well to a Republican crowd and according to a recent CNN poll, quoted by Mr. Garrison, to the 56% of Americans that now believe
Marks & Messick to face off for Trustee position
If you thought the battle between the White River Township Trustee Jay Marks and the township board was interesting the primary battle should be more so. Board member Mark Messick is not seeking re-election to the board but instead is running against Mr. Marks for the trustee position. No other candidate has filed as a Republican and no Democrat filed for the position. With the deadline to file for White River Township offices set for noon tomorrow, Friday, February 18, we decided to check with the Johnson County Clerk and find out who has filed as of 4pm Thursday. So far only Republicans have filed to be on the ballot. Libertarians, who have automatic ballot access in Indiana, have a longer time to file as candidates since they are classified as a minor party. As of late Thursday here is the list of those on running for the White River Township board; incumbents John Ebert and Joe Acker have both filed to run for re-elect. Forrest Chambers,
Killing the school referendum message?
Editors note: The following is a letter we received from Dr. Dick Huber. It is presented unedited. Your comments are welcome. When deliberating the referendum issue and a special election, please remember that sometimes it’s not about what you want, but how you go about getting what you want. Sometimes the message dies because the messenger was killed due to his delivery methods. Point #1. Timing. Voters know that we already have May and November election days to vote on local, state and federal candidates and issues. I’ve heard some of the rationale that May is possibly too soon to vote on a referendum and November may be too late. Surely there are enough good, creative heads on the school board and administrative staff to find the means for financial survival without a special election. Many voters may feel that voting on one issue is not worth the effort to go vote. Maybe a low turnout is what is anticipated.
Merger vote to move to November?
With what appears to be strong opposition to the reorganization effort of Greenwood and White River Township the Greenwood council and the township board are looking to buy some time to “sell” the idea to residents and to allow time for legal action to be completed. It looks like action will be taken to move it to the November ballot. If moved to November the reorganization plan will not take effect until January 2012. The change also allows time for the formation of a political action committee to promote the reorganization effort. By state law no taxpayer dollars could be used to form or support such an effort. It will be interesting to see whom and what companies fund such an effort. On the annexation front, Greenwood has appealed a judges ruling about the validity of the Bargersville annexation of an area along SR 135, from the current Bargersville city limits north to Stones Crossing Road. A 2005 Indiana law says that a town
