What does White River Township want?
The question no one seems willing or able to answer
This question keeps coming up, most recently as an editorial in the Daily Journal. But it’s been asked at “town hall meetings”, council and board meetings, discussions with neighbors and emails from White River Township (WRT) residents and area elected officials. After attending as many meetings as possible on this subject, reading hundreds of emails, taking phone calls on the issue from residents and personally discussing the topic with more residents than can be recalled, we believe that the large majority of comments about what WRT is looking for can be summarized in three things:
- We want a comprehensive solution which keeps the currently unincorporated area united. That means discussing future of WRT with Bargersville, Greenwood and perhaps the County and defining the best, not to be confused with largest, local government for each of our residents. (Many express an interest in self-incorporation; but that is a costly and labor intensive process that needs to be initiated by willing citizens. None have stepped up, so we have to conclude it is not a very practical or affordable option at this time.)
- We want to control the costs. We know that it is likely taxes will increase but what can be done to minimize those taxes? How can the consolidation offer the most efficient and effective solution?
- We definitely don’t want to do nothing and be left an island of homes surrounded by incorporated communities with the entire business tax base inside their borders. However, particularly after Monday night’s WRT Board meeting, it is apparent we need to respect those areas that are currently zoned agricultural and provide special taxing districts, similar to what was done in Zoinsville. The details can be worked out by the study committee.
We realize that these points don’t cover everything, but they are a starting point for meaningful discussion by all involved. Make your thoughts on this subject known to the WRT Board, there contract information is listed on this page. And, attend Wednesday’s meeting to show your support for the merger process and to express your thoughts concerning the future of White River Township.
