Citizens working hard for citizens

I sat in on Dale Tumey’s Land Use sub-committee tonight. For over an hour they examined maps, discussed options and finally came up with a possible proposal. Their task? Define the rural district of a merged Greenwood and White River Township.

During this period they considered trying to include as many farms in unincorporated White River Township in the district. This district would have a member on the city council which would have some level of “veto power” on those issues that directly affect the farm community.

But, they were also concerned about the needs of the neighborhoods which necessarily are included in the district. In the end,  about a third of the Township of the township was “under the line” that separated the “urban” from the “rural” districts. The line drawn was very tentative and given the twists and the turns there is no reason to try to describe here where it was drawn. (By the way, anyone who might have been interested was free to attend the meeting and watch them in action.) This will be presented to the full committee and no doubt adjusted before the final proposal is completed.

Make no doubt about it, the people on these sub-committees are working very hard to do the best job they can. No one is going to be pleased with all of their recommendations, but no one should take issue with there openness and effort.
