(Greenwood, IN April 20, 2009) Greenwood Common Council members along with two of three White River Township board members, and number of citizens received an update on the status of the on-going study of the possible reorganization of Greenwood and White River Township into a new local government entity, aka a city. Chair Pat Sherman addressed the meeting Monday evening in the Greenwood council chambers following a closed to the public executive session of the council and the White River Township board. You can watch Mr. Sherman’s comments for yourself in our “Featured Video” section of our homepage. (or click here to see the video)

Sherman commented that the study committee will “Always operate as if this will be successful.” He believes that is the best way for the committee to operate if they are going to succeed. The governance committee is looking at various options for the form of the new government and committee members (see article “Jack Cruse resigns from Governance Sub-Committee”) will be contact other city officials around Indiana to learn about their government and to ask “If you had to start all over again with a clean slate what would you do?” The Infrastructure sub-committee is currently looking at storm sewer issues in the township.

In response to a question from common council member Ron Bates, Sherman stated that the committee is on schedule to meet its deadline of providing a detailed report in July and a first draft version of the plan in September. If all goes as planned and both the council and the board approve the plan the matter will go to the voters in May of 2010 with an effective date of July 1, 2010.
