Mosquitoes & Local Government

by: Jody Veldkamp Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

I live next to a retention pond, or “lake” as real estate agents like to call it, in an unincorporated “urban” area of Center Grove and mosquitoes have never been a problem, thanks I guess to my homeowners association and my dues, at least until Sunday night when my wife pointed out that some water in a flower pot behind my garage was a breeding ground for, and full of, mosquitoes.

In the video below Greenwood council member Deer reminds to the reorg committee that Greenwood provides mosquito control and asks how will that be addressed in the “new” community. From a “you need to address everything in the plan” perspective I appreciate his comments. However I am not sure local government has to provide all my needs.

I can handle some things myself. What did I do?  Call my township government? Nope, I think Jay was busy, I walked into my garage, got some bug killer, sprayed them, emptied the water and solved the problem. All without bailout funds, stimulus money, a city truck or a city worker. I appreciate the efforts of the reorganization committee and the thoughtfulness of council member Deer but when it comes to mosquitoes I promise if you let me keep more of my tax dollars, I will continue to kill them myself.

I see no additional services we would receive. The sheriff’s department is doing a fine job. We already pay Greenwood for Sewer and water service.

The only change would be to acquire more government regulations and taxes. The taxes would be squandered on building monuments to a politician or to facilities which, if worthwhile, should be self supporting.

Our problem is bigger than what can be taken care of with a spray bottle from a garage – as a matter of fact my garage has been flooded again this year.

We should expand by digging a huge retention pond spanning several miles to hold the excess sewage which could be funded by and named after a polition to solve the drainage problem.
