Jay Marks comments on reorg committee

by: Jody Veldkamp Monday, August 24th, 2009

Over the weekend I interviewed White River Township trustee Jay Marks to get his thoughts on the status of the merger effort.

Recently Finance sub-committee chair Paul Reed reported that he was still waiting on information from the Trustee’s office. Mr. Marks agreed that some of the information requested has not been provided however he went on to say that Mr. Reed and his staff have been offered access to all files at the office and are welcome anytime during regular business hour to come down and gather the information and make copies of anything they need. Jay stated that since the office has two part time employees and he is also a part-time trustee they fill requests as time permits. He noted that a number of items Mr. Reed requested have been provided to other sub-committees and he could easily obtain the information by asking other committees for copies.

In response to questions about the progress the committee is making Mr. Marks responded with tongue firmly in cheek. He said he as “Very happy the reorganization counted the number of fire hydrants in the township. He is curious to find out if they are also going to find out how many porch lights work.

In response to the committees plan to split seats on board between current Greenwood residents and “new” residents he “wondered if current Greenwood residents will have to put green light bulbs in their porch lights and if White River residents will have to use red bulbs in order to identify the home previous location inside or outside the current Greenwood city limits.”

In response to questions about extending Greenwood regulations and services to the new area, although he doesn’t know if there is already a Greenwood ordinance regarding doorbells but he wondered “if the number of doorbells will also be surveyed and if there might be an ordinance passed requiring working doorbells if one does not already exist.”

I could add  comments but I am sure Mr. Marks’ comments speak for themselves. However we welcome your comments on the issues Mr. Marks raises or his specific comments.

Shouldn’t Jay stay within his area of expertise – spending tax dollars on a football field he’s going to GIVE away, to the detriment of taxpayers?

Editors note: The township trustee has no vote in township government. Any action taken to purchase or sell land must be approved by a majority vote of the township board.

No vote but the ability to spend over $40,000 of taxpayer money on football fields owned by the public that the public cannot use.

That $40,000 would feed a lot of poor people – which is actually one of the things a township trustee is SUPPOSED to do. Along with maintaining cemeteries and helping bury the poor, that is. I don’t see “parks” anywhere in the job description of township government.

You can do a lot of all three of those statutory requirements with a million dollars – which is the amount of money that the township trustee and township board are walking away from by not selling the land at value.

As a residents of Almar, we have been interested in buying some of the wooded property adjacent to the football field. We inquired about it almost 15 years ago. At the time it was owned by the school and was not for sale. Is there any chance that a homeowner bordering the property could purchase a couple of acres? Anybody know?
