“Give me one reason…”

by: Dann Veldkamp Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Not all of the comments we receive are published. Some arrive as e-mails that are not published, because we don’t have permission. But I thought I’d share the content of one we got this week. I really don’t remember whether the person was from Greenwood or White River Township, but I do know that the concern applies to both areas: Give us one good reason that we should vote for the reorganization.

While the reorg committee has done a good job of providing us with a great deal of numbers, rules that will or will not apply, how our garbage will be collected and and eventually will suggest our city tax rate. What difference does it really make? For some the $300 to $500 in extra property tax will make a difference in their lives, but for most it’s less than we spend at fast food restaurants in an average year. What we really need is a reason to vote for the reorganization. What is the vision of the new Greenwood?

What is the value our merger? How is the new city going to distinguish itself from becoming yet another “me-too” suburb? I am not suggesting the we try to “recreate the ambiance of Vienna” or spend tens of millions of dollars to make ourselves something we are not, but what are we ultimately trying to be? The Reorganization Committee, the Greenwood Mayor and White River Township Board have a responsibility to provide a vision worthy of pursuit.

We have before us a once in a lifetime opportunity provided by the Indiana state legislature in the reorganization statute;  the opportunity  to build a new Indiana community. Let’s not squander the opportunity.
