Another “body” in the weeds

While the reorganization committee’s stated mission is to “create an efficient, effective” government it seems that virtually every “answer” we have seen to this point is “hire more people” and expand government. Neither of which is efficient or effective. We already have learned of the $2 million additional cost to provide police protection to replace the service currently provided by the sheriff department. Now Forrest Chambers the health, safety and welfare subcommittee chair says we need to hire an additional “code enforcement officer” to handle complaints about weeds and tall grass. According to today’s Daily Journal article this is a service not currently provided by the county. Sounds like the county has the right idea, fewer people, lower cost.

The reorganization committee needs to give us a break, or they will break us financially with the additional tax burden. They have to find a better way. It is time for all the subcommittees to truly explore if a service is needed, not just figure out how to provide it to the new areas because Greenwood already has the service, position, rule, oridance or whatever (see”Mosquitoes & Local Government”). It is time to look for innovation in providing services, time to decide what services are really needed. If you want the citizens of White River Township and Greenwood to vote for the reorganization plan then it is time you take your mission statement seriously and begin to apply it to each and every part of your plan.
