Council member identifies problems with plan

Council member Ron Bates stated he has a issues with the plan. Mr. Bates identified three specific issues with the plan.

  1. It will create more bureaucracy and more inefficiency. He does not believe that is what a reorganization effort is supposed to create. Editor Note: The mission statement says the plan is supposed to create an efficient government.
  2. Eliminates checks in balance on how money is spent in the city. Although the council still has control over the budget, the spending of the money is controlled by the mayor and the mayor’s appointed comptroller.
  3. Self-determination is also an issue. Mr. Bates pointed out that there is a group in WRT that would like to determine their own future and they should have a chance to see if self-incorporation is a viable alternative before a reorganization effort takes place.

The councilman went on to say he would be fine with being outvoted “so be it” he stated at least if the council and WRT Board approve of the plan the people of White River Township and Greenwood will have the final vote.
