The cost of being Bargersville
Earlier this year two areas agreed to voluntarily be annexed into Bargersville. At the time, this seemed like a logical way to avoid being included in the reorganization which included unincorporated White River Township and Greenwood. Now that the cost of this decision is becoming clearer, some of the residents may be having second thoughts.
At tonight’s joint meeting of the Greenwood Common Council and the White River Township Board it was revealed that the average property tax of those areas which will now be part of Bargersville will pay about 51% more in property tax than if they were part of the proposed new city of Greenwood.
While the estimates do not include the 10-year property tax abatement for the agricultural areas, these abatements will expire. The reorganization proposal exempts agricultural properties from city property tax as long as it remain agricultural in use.
Good deal? Well, that’s up to those paying the property tax premium. (Those in the southwest annexation areas still have an opportunity to appeal the decision of the Bargersville Town Council [Note: Watch Video Here].) But I do know that I would not want my property tax to be over 50% higher, with no increase in services.
