Vote & public meetings on plan set
Although the “final” plan (read it here) for the potential reorganization of White River Township and Greenwood presented tonight that does not mean what was presented tonight is what will, or might, be passed by the Greenwood Common Council and White River Township Board. Each body must pass identical plans if the proposal is going to a public vote in May. If either body rejects the plan, the public will never have the opportunity to vote on the plan.
Although the Greenwood Common Council quickly moved ahead to a first reading of the plan, it also approved public meetings on the plan before the legally required public hearing before the final vote. The first public forum will be held on November 30, from 6 to 8pm, second on Saturday December 5th from 2:30 to 4:30pm at the Community Church of Greenwood. The Greenwood Council and the White River Township Board will sponsor the forum.
The official, legally required, public hearing and second reading will be held in the Greenwood Council on December 21st, and at WRT Board on December 22. The vote on the plan by those legislative bodies will take place on those dates. There is one other option they could seek a continuance but then they would run the risk of not being able to present the budget prior to the end of the year which is required by state law if the reorganization plan creating the “new” city of Greenwood is going to begin on July 1, 2010.
