Pretty much everything that's been written about this misses the real issue. Maybe the Greenwood police chief acted unprofessionally by going out of his jurisdiction and maybe he wasted taxpayer dollars by making his men work overtime on what he said was a publicity stunt. But the real scandal here is that in the United States of America, you do not send big groups of police officers to peaceful public meetings where people are saying things that government officials don't want to hear. That's what they do in Iran and other Islamofascist countries. That's what they do in North Korea and other Communist countries. That's not done in the U.S.A.

A government official didn't like what was being said at an open government meeting and called police. Whatever the intent, interjecting a police presence or show of force or threat of implied force or whatever you want to call it into peaceful political proceedings is one of the worst and most undemocratic things any government can do. It's un-American. Whatever intent they had, it's disturbing that an elected official and the police chief have such little regard for basic American values.

That being said, this whole thing should have been more of a "Greenwood" issue than a "reorganization' issue because the real issue has more to do with the lack of judgment and values of some individuals.

Mark,
Nonsense! Would the Greenwood police rush to downtown Indianapolis? There had been a comment made that the Greenwood police would not be able to respond all the way over to western WRT. I think someone called and the police chief tried to prove a point. There are jurisdictions and each department is to respect the other's jurisdictions. Did those officers come from east of I-65? That's a long way.

Mark, it just reinforces my belief that some folks in Greenwood play fast/loose with the law when it benefits them.

Pitcher admitted to the JC Sheriff (and was quoted in the D-J) that he sent his men as a PR stunt. If that's the kind of sheriff he is, well, I'd rather not have him as the person in charge of the law enforcement officials who watch over me & my family. I mean, if you don't respect fellow law enforcement officers, ...
