Adjusting to the change
Yes, it’s been a couple of weeks since our last article. Of course Christmas and New Years have something to do with that, but we are also adjusting to the change of pace. Before the votes by the Greenwood Common Council and the White River Township (WRT) Board we could attend the meetings and write about them. Now things have changed. We need to spend more time talking with people, questioning officials and putting things together before we can write a story. We have yet to fully adjust. We will.
If you get the Daily Journal, you may have noticed their report that the WRT Board meeting may have been illegal because it was not properly announced. State law requires that all public hearings be promoted through a paid advertisement in a local newspaper. While nearly 300 people somehow managed to find out about and attend this “secret” meeting, it is likely that the Board will have to hold another meeting and vote again. We will be following up on this.
There are other rumors and ideas that we are checking out. The Township Trustee says, for example, that should the Board not vote again, there is the potential for a lawsuit invalidating any further action. But, others have also mentioned potential legal action sooner or later, so there will always be something else to cover.
Finally, we continue to hear rumblings of continued interest in self-incorporation. Nothing concrete at the moment, but certainly promising for those of us working to keep you informed of developments concerning the future of White River Township.
Therefore, while we admit that the year is off to a bit of a slow start. Our plans call for providing recaps of past meetings, video clips of various comments made throughout the planning process, as well as reviewing the plan and digging into specific sections to foster thought and awareness of what might happen with a yes or a no vote in May. We promise that we are still here and will continue to provide information and a forum for discussion as long as there is a big question on the future of the Township.

Did the state recently pass anything to eliminate township government? I heard a roomer that the State House of Representatives was going to vote on something regarding townships, that the county would assume full responsibility. Can anyone provide further details or was I mislead?
Comment made on January 21st, 2010 at 3:30 pmStephanie, nothing has been passed re elimination of Township Gov’t. I believe the house of rep has passed a bill that would allow individual townships in each county to vote on whether they want to keep their township government but it would still have to pass the Senate.
