It is up to you, many people don’t understand that

I continue to hear people say the council and the board voted to “approve” the merger proposal. I guess it could be semantics but if you actually listen closely to the White River Township Boards comments (see the story and video here) actually what they did was what I would hope would happen. Our government trusted the residents to chose the type of government we want.

I don’t want to get into a long civics lesson but our government, local, state and national, is not a democracy, it is a republic. You may recall that the close of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 Ben Franklin was asked “What form of government have you given us?” His reply, “A republic if you can keep it.” However at this point in the future of our communities the citizens need to decide what form and powers our “republic” form of local government takes. Although some of the council and board members may support the plan, one thing is for sure. Their action as firmly put the future of our communities in the hands of its residents. Now it is your job to read, learn, and speak about the future of our communities. Ultimately it is your duty to make a well-informed vote.
