Dueling forums – Can’t we all get together

by: Jody Veldkamp Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

(UPDATED with Jay Marks reply) We are used to candidates competing against each other but now White River Township has a case of candidates scheduling their own forum with just their candidates to compete against a forum open to all candidates hosted by a non-political community organization. Current trustee Jay Marks yesterday (Monday) issued a press release promoting a “meet the candidates night” to be held on next Wednesday, April 28th.  Last week White River Citizens United announced a community forum, open to all candidates, to be held at the Center Grove Schools Administration building at the same time as Mr. Marks’ forum.  We have requested a comment from Mr. Marks regarding his conflicting forum which features his team of candidates for the White River Township Board. As soon as we hear from him we will post his response.

We are used to Mr. Marks going his own way but we also used to Mr. Marks being open to the public, speaking his mind and not being afraid to face those who disagree with him. That is why I find it strange that he would announce his forum after a forum open to all candidates had already  announced. I would urge Mr. Marks and his group of candidates for White River Township Board, David Pollard, Greg Rainbolt and Margaret (Peggy) Young, to reschedule their meeting so residents of White River Township will have the opportunity to see all the candidates.

MyGuyJay “My Guy Jay” Marks, it is your move.

Late Monday night I received a phone call from Mr. Marks stating the he had is forum planned back in March “long before” he was aware of the WRCU forum. He states that he had a number of people who “wanted to meet the new candidates” since they were unknown to most people in the township. Marks said he himself had not know Rainbolt and Pollard until recently. He had no intention of scheduling a conflicting forum but his was “already scheduled and that’s what happened.”

Thank you Jay for giving us an update, but I would suggest that it would be best that all the candidates gather on one stage and face the public hosted by a non-political organization and let the voters meet and question all the candidates. Do what is best for the citizens of White River Township and cancel or move your event.

I was hoping with your note here that you would give some leverage with the “unmentioned names” who are candidates. It is mysterious that Jay Marks has never asked me how I feel about “the Merger”, yet claims to know how all candidates believe about the proposed “Merger”.
So, I will mention that my name is Kenneth Marshall (most call me Ken). I am running for WRT Board. I am not a part of a group of “slated” candidates.
I am running as a Republican who wants to speak for and represent the homeowners and citizens of White River Township.
Thanks, I will e mail or text you a pic of my campaign sign. It can be seen on some street corners and lawns. (and I am looking for more.
Thanks for the coverage. Kenneth Marshall

The only question I would like answered from the WRT Board candidates is – Are you for or against the merger?

Ok, Andi here you go. NO I am not for the merger. (by the way I am a Candidate for Township Board if you have not heard).
Now can we move along to ignored candidates that the Trustee will not acknowledge, not invite to his meeting, misinform most everyone he comes in contact with about the “issue of the day” (which on most every day is “flaming” about some reorganization that will probably not happen anyway. It will be voted on before the next Township Board takes office in January.
Is it possible that there are other issues about spending, budgets, getting himself health insurance paid for by your tax dollars (although denied by the current board) and many others that Mr. Marks would prefer YOU not ponder?
I think so. Go to http://www.whiterivertownship.com. Try to figure out who is paying for an official website named for YOUR township and promoting Jay Marks and his select candidates for election.
That is “small change” by comparison of the bigger issues, but at least you can see it for yourself.
Oh, yes. Please vote for Kenneth Marshall for Township Board. I want to get some of the inconsist things fixed and get back on the road for positive Township government. Thanks

P.S. Andy: You need to look around. There are a lot more questions to ask that will directly affect your taxes depending on who gets elected to Township elected positions.

I am not too familiar with Jay and the new candidates. I understand they are against the merger and this pleases me. We are finding out there are hidden cost and higher property tax than those in favor of the merger will put out in the public’s eye and admit to. This sneaky approach and downright lying has the public upset and with the full truth, I am sure there will not be a merger. The person running against Jay is and incumbent but portrays himself as a new comer to another position. I understand there is an independent being placed on the next ballot that is against the merger and everyone should check him out and if proven true, vote him into office.

MARK DEVOE Said:

The Trustee’s primary responsibilities are poor relief and cemetery care. Electing a person best qualified to handle those duties should be the only criteria in deciding who to elect in November. The new trustee’s opinion relative to the merger counts for nothing since the merger question itself will be settled in that same November election .
