Bargersville, don’t divide to conquer

by: Dann Veldkamp Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

A newsletter preview of tomorrow’s Daily Journal says…

Bargersville wants a new merger study. A missed deadline to get the merger plan on the fall ballot presents an opportunity to start a new merger study, town attorney Nicholas Kile said. If the board doesn’t agree, Bargersville will give all township residents who live south of Stones Crossing Road the choice of being annexed into the town. The town council introduced a 2,500-acre annexation that Bargersville would pursue only if its proposal for a new merger study were rebuffed. Before starting that annexation, the town will try to begin a new round of talks over how to divide the Center Grove area. The town council voted 3-0 Monday to approve a resolution for a new merger study with the township. The resolution calls for a merger plan that wouldn’t force town government on residents who would rather be left alone.

Can this be for real? Are they really trying to take us back to the beginning with a proposal that was a non-starter nearly two years ago? Come on, why don’t you take it to the next level: Don’t divide White River Township, unite it into Bargersville. All you need to do is demonstrate that you can run a city at a low tax rate and you have a shot at extending the town up to County Line Road, quickly. What are you waiting for?

As Eugene Morris said at an earlier meeting “we are all Center Grove.” Now is the time to keep us together as a single community. Prove you are a town and not a utility company with a town hall.

Nobody knows how this will all turn out, but certainly Bargersville’s latest move is something to consider.

One Response to “Bargersville, don’t divide to conquer”

Joe Said:

The current township board, for all of their flaws, at least pushed for the entire township to be included in a merger study.

I can only hope the incoming township board shares the same beliefs.
