Merger not on 2010 ballot

by: Jody Veldkamp Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

The county election board voted today that the White River Township/Greenwood reorganization paperwork was filed too late to appear on the November ballot. The board chose to go with the election law requirement of an August 1 deadline instead of the Government Modernization deadline of 60 days before the election.
The board did not act on the issue of the referendum appearing on the 2012 ballot.

Honestly, I feel very mixed about this. As much as I wanted us to put this to bed, I am somewhat relieved that the rules are still being enforced.

When this does go to the ballot (eventually) I have one figure to share with everyone following this site: $15,000,000 dollars (that’s million…). That’s the amount of taxation that will be introduced to WRT… brand spanking new tax going to the City of Greenwood.

According to the Johnson County database, we have approximately 13,660 properties registered in unincorporated WRT. The average value of these taxable properties is about $193,500 and under Greenwood’s proposed tax rate (.57 to .58/$100 AV), the average Joe or Jane will be paying about $1,100 per year in addition to what they pay now.

Are you telling me that we can’t do it cheaper than $15 million dollars? C’mon man…
